Spotify is a music platform used by the masses. They understand that as a popular music platform their impact on society means something to their audience, which is why we’ll be exploring those initiatives and site Life at Spotify.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
On Spotify’s site Life at Spotify you’ll find all of their corporate social responsibility initiatives at the top of the page. Under Diversity, Equity & Impact we learn that they are comitted to creating a platform that encourages all three with their employees, listeners and musicians all using the app. Spotify defines terms like diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in terms of their company on their site.
It’s clear through their website that these topics are not just that, shared to make the company look better in the public eye. They truly believe these are important values for the company to have. When it comes down to it they are taking action and showing these values in the movements they support and the social impact they have established.
An example of these values being more than just words is the amount of statistics you can find on their site. They have many different graphs and charts that show their growth of inclusion and diversity present in their staffing from 2019 to 2023 in positions across the globe. They have increase their percentage of Female employees across the globe and in leadership positions by 2.9% and increased their percentage of Non Binary employees by 0.2%.

They also share statistics of the ethinicity data of their employees in the same time frame.

Spotify says, “We’re moving in the right direction, but we know there’s more work to be done.”
It’s very commendable that they are so open and transparent with their stats inside their company. It shows that they are aware of their issues and shortcomings and that they are working to improve that. They are clearly working towards building a better work environment that aligns with all of their values.

As a leader in responsible and impactful storytelling, we’re advising our creators and partners on how they can achieve ambitious social goals- pushing culture, acceptance and truth forward.”
On their site they highlight two different programs/initiatives. Frequency, a global initiative that was designed to celebrate Black art, entertainment, culture and community. EQUAL is the second, created to celebrate and empower female creators, artists and podcasters.
Spotify also has an internal program looking to give back to their employees and creators using their platform. It gives employees a way to contribute to their favorite charities and non profits.
“The program has three components:
- Donation Matching: We match donations made to eligible charities either on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis. Every full and part time employee has the ability to get up to 15k USD in donations matched by Spotify.
- Dollar for Doers: Spotifiers who volunteer with eligible organizations ear a donation for their service to the service to the organization.

Mental Health
The last area of corporate social responsibility Spotify works on is Mental Health. They want all of the creators and listeners using their platform to know that it’s okay to not be okay, and to feel safe enough to ask for help.
Heart & Soul is one of their global mental health programs for their employees. It was launched in 2018 and offers a space for employeers and creaters to have a safe space to recieve the help they need.
Through Heart & Soul they raise awareness and educate others on the effects of mental health, it offers support from licensed health professionals and helps reduce the stigma around mental health and creates a space for conversation on these topics.
Heart & Soul also offers support when it comes to Domestic Abuse Situations. It offers the same opportunties for conversation and education on serious situations like these. Creators and employees can access a multitude of resources to keep them safe and protected without disrupting the rest of their life.
Overall Spotify succeeds in many way to increase their impact on society through diversity, equity & inclusion; taking action on climate reform in their own backyard; offering mental health resources and highlighting creators discussing current social justice issues.
